Why colour affects the way we feel

Colour is not decoration only. It shapes mood, memory, energy and the emotional atmosphere of a room.

Why colour affects the way we feel

Colour reaches us before language. We can enter a room and feel calmer, lighter, more awake or more protected before we understand why. This is why colour in art is so powerful. It does not need to explain itself. It works through sensation.

A bold pink can feel joyful, tender, rebellious or vulnerable depending on the marks around it. Electric blue can create depth and clarity. Yellow can open a space with optimism and light. Green can bring movement, freshness and a sense of life. In an abstract painting, these colours are not isolated. They speak to each other and create an emotional climate.

When choosing art for a home, ask yourself what you want the room to hold. Do you want energy in the living room? Softness in the bedroom? A sense of courage near the entrance? The right painting can support that feeling every day. It becomes part of how the space receives you.

Esther Cohen's work often uses vivid colour because emotion is rarely neutral. Colour can carry memory, chaos, joy and transformation at the same time. That is why a painting can feel personal even when it is abstract. It gives form to something you recognize before you can name it.
